Does an employer have to verify a worker's social security number?

The employer must obtain each employee's full name and social security number. This information is reported on Form W-2, Annual Wage and Tax Statement. The employer can ask the employee to show them their social security card and the employee is required to show the card if he or she has it available. If not, the employee can obtain a new card by completing Form SS-5, Application for a Social Security Card.
