How does an employer obtain an Employer Identification Number?
In order to obtain an Employer Identification Number, an employer must complete IRS Form SS-4. The instructions to Form SS-4 are also available for your review.
Although it is possible to fax or mail a printed copy of Form SS-4 to the IRS, most employers apply for an EIN using the Internet EIN online SS-4 application system provided by the IRS. Certain companies cannot use the Internet EIN process, including entities with a foreign address, LLC's without entity types, REMICS, state & local governments, federal government/military, and indian tribal government/enterprise. Another common method is to file over the telephone, at 800-829-4933. Applying online or over the phone will result in the taxpayer being issued an EIN immediately.
