Payroll Overview

How do I use this site?

Payroll is not simple. Nevertheless, we have tried to make understanding the myriad of payroll tax laws as simple and straightforward as possible. The majority of the Payroll Gude is dedicated to understanding the IRS code affecting employers in the United States. It must be stated, however, that each state has its own unique payroll tax laws, and therefore its own withholding, depositing, and filing requirements. Summaries of each state's requirements can be found in the State Info section by selecting the state in which your employees work.

Wherever possible, we have tried to cross-reference key terms back to the glossary for further understanding. This process is not absolute, so whenever you come across a key term or phrase that you do not understand, we suggest quickly looking it up in the glossary and then use your browser's back button to return to the answer page.

Finally, we once again want to reiterate that this site is a constant work in process and was started in February, 2007. We are not part of a large organization or government entity and do not receive compensation for our time. We have three people contributing their expertise as time permits and are working as quickly as possible to answer the most commonly asked payroll questions first.

Nevertheless, if you have a question and cannot find a suitable answer, we'll be happy to move your request to the front of the line. Simply Submit a Question and we will be happy to respond with a link to the answer as soon as possible.
